Curtain Rises for Spring Awakening at Phoenix

The new production of “Spring Awakening” is now live at the Phoenix Theatre, where it will run thru October 23^rd. Directed by Bryan Fonseca, with musical direction by Tim Brickley and Kevin D. Smith.

Ice Cream Social for Diabetics

Cathy Kightlinger will do anything to get the scoop on the social scene in Indy. As the Indianapolis Star's TOOT (Talk Of Our Town) Girl, the stylish Kightlinger is expected to hang with Hoosierland's elite at every charitable ball, fashion benefit, bakeoff and black-tie chicken situation the Circle City dishes out. 

This week, the effervescently blonde reporter could be found cheerfully manning booth #4 at the Annual Ice Cream Social on the Circle.  Ice cream to benefit diabetes? Strange but true.

"I scream, you scream...We all scream: I'll be scooping from 12:30 to 1 pm tomorrow" Kightlinger posted on her Facebook wall, and tweeted to her ever-growing list of followers on Twitter. Without the slightest bit of irony, the twittering TOOT columnist went on to inform us that this year's ice cream event was being sponsored by the American Dairy Association of Indiana -- all to benefit the Diabetes Youth Foundation of Indiana.

Sweet Sponsorship? When Indy Social pointed out the rough associative fit, it resulted in the following FB Wall back and forth:

Grillin and Chillin

Summertime in Indy, and the grilling is easy. Indy Social is loving its new infrared grill, all chrome and fancy! It cooks my salmon and veggies fast and clean, but the all chrome sure gets hot on these 90 degree days. Guess I'll need to spring for the optional grill cover!

Zippers of Zoomerville Returns to Phoenix Theatre

Ready for more speed, greed and the dirty deed? The Phoenix Theatre will bring back an updated (and shortened) musical spoof of Indy's annual fast-track fever for a special one-month run, April 28-May 28th.  Described as a "Gilbert and Sullivanesque celebration of flat-out folly and full-throttle love," The Zippers of Zoomerville,  was written by Indy ad man Jack O’Hara with musical score and direction from Hit City Recording's Tim Brickley.

Blue Eyes Driving in the Rain

Indy Social had the pleasure of attending a performance by the peripatetic road warrior Willie Nelson last weekend. The bio-diesel and herb-loving country singer (fresh from a pot bust in Texas) took to the stage with a giant flag from the Lone Star State - and treated a sold-out audience at the Murat Theatre to a mellow mix of his classic hits.

An enthusiastic crowd applauded his sparse pickings and ragged vocal stylings, and roared as he delivered his famous and now particularly poignant lyrics: “Almost busted in Laredo / But for reasons that I'd rather not disclose / But if you're stayin' in a motel there and leave / Just don't leave nothin' in your clothes.”

According to media reports, the blue-eyed country bard might be able to sing his way out of any jail time for this latest marijuana possession. The local prosecutor, apparently a fan, said he was willing to let Nelson off with a $100 fine --  if the cannabis-loving cowboy singer would performed "Blue Eyes Smiling in the Rain" for the Texas courtroom, this according to celebrity gossip blog TMZ.
